Healing Trauma with Guided Drawing® is an embodied creative arts therapy approach which is facilitated by a fully qualified Art Therapist with specific training in this technique. Used as a therapy intervention it can be an effective process to settle the nervous system. Clients are invited to draw or paint using both hands which enables a direct expression of their 'Felt Sense' and inner tension. The therapist encourages the rhythmic repetition of a variety of universal shapes to safely structure the therapy experience. The principle concept in this body-focused approach is to find an 'Active Response' to the Trauma whereby the client can complete the Fight or Flight response that was not possible for them to move on from at the time of their trauma, so that their Body can then understand that the Trauma is over. This is based on Peter Levine's Sensorimotor Theory that post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can only be settled by completing the inhibited Fight or Flight response, a process which will then settle the amygdala and hippocampus in the brainstem. During the current lockdown restrictions I am offering this approach via Online Therapy, so if you'd like to know more about Guided Drawing® sessions please CONTACT me for more details.
